Mitäs Mitäs Mitäs Festival, Urjala: DEVELOPING PARTICIPATION – Inclusion of Festival Audiences in Content Creation

The festival promotes freedom of expression and a culture of active participation, where audiences are not only consumers of art but also creators of festival content.

Festival association Mitäs ry is producing the multi-arts Mitäs Mitäs Mitäs festival, a celebration of alternative arts that has taken place in the vicinity of Nuutajärvi, Urjala since 2015.

By developing the participatory nature of the festival, Mitäs ry promotes freedom of expression and a culture of active participation, where the ‘audience’ is transformed from a passive consumer and receiver of art into an active producer of the festival and a creator of art and culture.

Festival goers participate in creation of the programme on many levels: through numerous workshops, community artworks, inclusive performances, open stage jam sessions – or pop-up activities, for instance.

The festival encourages visitors to perform at the festival, to hold their own workshops and express themselves freely. Mitäs Mitäs Mitäs wants to create a culture of sustainable participation in the field of Finnish festivals and in this way promote equality in the wider crowd of cultural experience creators.

This year, the Mitäs Mitäs Mitäs festival will take place on 15–17th July 2022, and the development the participatory side of the festival will focus on improving the technical capability to curate a more immersive experience and enable a more spontaneous self-expression than ever.

A varied and surprising multi-arts programme, mystical and inspiring milieu and heart-warming human encounters create a communal celebration of creativity in the naturally beautiful Mitäs Land.
