The third round of applications for the Meanwhile Use Scheme: in addition to locations in Tampere, new premises available from the City of Nokia as well.

The third round of applications is now open for the Meanwhile Use Scheme. The experts of the cultural services and city real estate management have again selected vacant spaces suitable for cultural use. This time, cultural operators can apply for two sites in Nokia in addition to the four temporarily vacant spaces in Tampere. Selected applicants will be able to use the nominated space rent-free for a fixed period of time.

The Meanwhile Use Scheme was conceived as part of the Tampere26 European Capital of Culture bid and has been developed since 2021 as part of the regional cultural development project, Operation Pirkanmaa.

The idea behind the Meanwhile Use Scheme is that temporarily vacant spaces are offered free of charge to cultural and art operators through an open call. This model can alleviate the lack of cultural working spaces temporarily and it also offers possibilities for creating site-specific art concepts.

The City of Nokia joins the Meanwhile Use Scheme

The current call is open until 21 May. Six different spaces will be available in the open call of spring 2023. For the first time, spaces provided by the City of Nokia are also included.

– We were inspired by the Meanwhile Use Scheme, as the Art House and the old high school in Nokia are becoming empty after the transfer of activities to new locations. Thus, we started collaboration with the property management of the city to participate,” says Pia Keltti, Cultural Coordinator of the City of Nokia’s Cultural Services.

– Temporary use of empty spaces offers opportunities for new, original regional cultural projects. It also makes sense to fill otherwise empty spaces with activities,” she continues.

New locations in the center of Tampere available

Among the temporarily vacant spaces owned by the City of Tampere, two spaces from the Lielahti Manor and a space at Pyynikki are included in this open call. Another new target is a spacious office with lake views on the second floor of an office building at Voimakatu, Ratina.

– In this third round, the Meanwhile Use Scheme will be further expanded. There are now more spaces in the open call than before, and we hope to receive proposals for the use of these spaces on as wide a scale as possible,” says Sami Siltanen, producer of Operation Pirkanmaa.

You can apply for a space for a variety of cultural activities: for example, to produce, present or exhibit works, to carry out projects or even for open community cultural activities. Some form of cultural activity must take place in the designated temporarily vacant space – or as a result of its use.
